How to shop mindfully on Black Friday

The deals have been rolling into our inboxes this past week and oh my, aren't they tempting! Our fingers can’t add to cart fast enough! But those deals often lead to a wardrobe full of nothing to wear and an empty wallet. Not to mention the piles of shoddy clothing heading to landfill once we are done with it. It’s important that we take a step back and asses who and what we are supporting during the Black Friday sales.Shopping with our values and supporting smaller businesses is the perfect way to green up the Black Friday Sales.

Mindful shopping can help you leave a lighter footprint on our planet and also leave you with a better wardrobe. Its a win-win!

Do you actually need it?

Ignore the flashing “up to 50% off” signs and ask your self if it’s something you want to add to your wardrobe. A good rule of thumb is to picture three different looks that you can pair with the item you are considering. The more items that match, the more likely you are to wear it. If time allows it, think about putting the item on hold or giving it a day to think about it. If it’s something that you can’t stop thinking about it during that time, then you know its an item that has earned a space in your wardrobe.

Can you care for it?

Understanding what type of fabric your clothing is made from can help you care for it better. Different fabrics required different levels of care. Natural fibres such as linen, cotton and wool are usually the easiest to care for (just don't throw your woollens in the washing machine or dryer). Synthetics, like polyester or nylon, aren't great for our environment and should be avoided as much as possible. But if they do happen to come into your wardrobe, try washing them less to avoid shedding microplastics into our waterways. Semi-synthetics like viscose/rayon and bamboo are man made fabrics made from natural fibres like wood pulp or bamboo. These fabrics are usually easy care, but can be prone to shrinkage if not washed correctly.
Overall, listen to what that care label is really saying. Caring for your clothing correctly means it will last longer and you will save more money in the long run.

Would I buy this full price?

We get it. Sustainable fashion is expensive and a bit of a discount can be a huge blessing. But sometimes that means we can get a bit carried away when adding to cart. If those discounts are calling you, take a step back and asses why you are buying it. If its just because of the discount, then maybe think about putting it back and saving yourself some money.
Now we don’t want to be a party pooper, these sales are a great way to get a few items that have been hanging out on your wish list, but just make sure you aren't grabbing them because of the discounted price. After all, sales roll around often.

Does it align with your values?

Supporting those who do good by our planet lets the big brands know we mean business. Every time you back a small brand, the do a little happy dance!
Once you have figured out your values, try to spend you money in that direction. If a brand paying their garment workers a living wage is important to you, seek out brands who share those thoughts. Or maybe labels using innovative fabrics is right up your alley, support them on their unique journey.
When we throw as much support as possible behind these brands as possible, it shows others that we want to see a greener world. And how amazing is it to tell the story of your favourite brand to those who ask about your cool top.
